Yama no Kami ・ 山の神 Artisan Shaving Soap・115g

In Japanese folklore, Yama no Kami is the deity of the mountains — guardian of the forest, its creatures, and the people who live by its rhythms. Hunters, woodcutters, and charcoal burners have honoured her for centuries as the life force that moves through the trees, the soil, and the animals that dwell among them. In spring she descends to the rice fields. In autumn she returns to the peaks. She is the quiet presence behind every living thing on the mountain.

This soap is our tribute to her mountain — a scent drawn from the woods the Yama no Kami watches over.

The scent opens with agarwood and rosewood — dense, resinous, rooted in the earth. Cardamom and pepper surface briefly, the way warmth finds you through cold mountain air. Beneath that: sandalwood, amber, tonka bean, vetiver, and a trace of vanilla. A deep, woody, unhurried fragrance — not sharp, not sweet, just the honest smell of old-growth timber and the damp stillness between the trees.

Handmade in small batches using a tallow-based formula enriched with olive oil, shea butter, rice bran oil, goat's milk, avocado oil, jojoba, kokum butter, honey, lanolin, and duck fat. White kaolin clay supports a stable, dense lather.

The soap is housed in a thick-walled violet glass jar with a threaded Bakelite lid. Violet glass filters out visible light and UV, protecting the soap's fragrance and natural ingredients from degradation over time. The jar has real weight in the hand — it sits firmly on the shelf and on the countertop. Load your brush directly inside. The wide opening gives ample room to build lather without needing a separate bowl. When the soap is used up, the jar remains.
