Absolute Rarity and something we have the first time in our shop. 2 Orihi Type Kamisoris in their original box together with 2 handwritten notes in which they were wrapped. The notes are from a daughter writing her Japanese father who is as it seems in Shanghai at this moment.

Both Kamisoris were made in the Meiji Era, somewhat around 1900!

Full Description

These Kamisori were hand forged out of 2 layers, the cutting part is made of high carbon and the supporting layer of a soft steel or Jigane

What is so special about these Kamisoris is, that the steel is real Tamahagane.
Tamahagane is the traditional steel produced in Japan for centuries. As Japan has no big resources of iron ore, the steel is produced out of iron sand in a several day long process by hand. It was the main source for all Samurai Swords.

The steel layer is brittle and hard, while the Iron gives the right flexibility.
Both layers are not stainless, so always keep your razor dry after your shave and protect it with a thin layer of oil.
Why are these razors not stainless?
Stainless blades are made of an alloy that will prevent it from staining, but also will make it less hard.
High carbon steels, like the cutting layer of these Kamisori, have a much higher hardness and will keep their smooth shaving quality for much longer before having to sharpen them again, Especially this Tamahagane layer!

We got these Kamisoris with the handle wrapping almost falling off, we removed the old handles and removed any rust under the old Rattan wrapping.

The Razor Handles were then partially blued by us, to protect them from rusting. Bluing is similar to the protective coat which the razor had after being quenched in the time it has been made. Bluing forms a thin layer of magnetite (Fe3O4) on top of the iron.
After bluing we have attached new rattan handles. The rattan is imported from Japan and was attached in the same way it was before. Historically exact.

The engravings on the Kamisori read as:
on the first Kamisori:
をごや・Ogoya・the brand of the kamisori
on the second:
登録商標・toroku shoyo・registered trademark
土・Tsuchi・the brand of the kamisori

The Kamisoris come in their original box.
consists of three parts.
A lid, that was glued at the end, after it was damaged it seems, this can still be seen.
The box itself which contains a holder for the two Kamisoris.
The Holding part is almost like a rocker, you press down one end and the other end starts coming out at the other end of the box. (please watch the video) The Kamisoris are well protected in the box, but we also attached 2 blade guards specially made for the Orihis so they will not touch anything during the transport.

The box is fully lacquered with Urushi, The inside is black, the outside reddish/ brown. A great piece of Art

Both Orihi Kamisoris are fully disinfected and absolutely shave ready!
