Nakayama Tomae from Mt. Nakayama, Kyoto. 8000+ grit, slightly hard on our scale.
A thick, warm honey-coloured stone with a fine, even grain running the length of the face. The natural sides are left as they came out of the bed. The face is stamped 中山合砥・Nakayama awasedo together with the mark of the 加藤鉱山・Katō quarry, and carries our own mark and the stock number 101.
The extra body makes it comfortable on the bench while still small enough for one-handed honing. Suited to kamisori, straight razors and fine knife work.

This Nakayama natural finishing stone originates from Mt. Nakayama in Kyoto, one of the most respected sources of high-grade finishing stones. With an estimated grit of 8000 and above, it is suited for final polishing and edge refinement.
The stone is slightly hard, offering a very smooth, controlled sharpening feel. It is capable of producing a true mirror finish, particularly valued in traditional ji-duya work on Japanese swords, where surface clarity and evenness are essential.
Unlike larger bench stones, this piece is shaped to sit naturally in the hand. Its size and balance make it well suited for one-handed honing, while still providing excellent control and feedback. It can be used on knives, kamisori, and razors, especially where a fine polish and smooth edge are desired.

4. Clean After Use
After sharpening, rinse the stone thoroughly with clean water to remove metal particles and residue. Use a soft brush if needed. Do not use soap, detergents, or abrasive cleaners.
5. Dry Slowly and Naturally
Allow the stone to air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, heaters, or rapid temperature changes, as natural stones can crack if dried too quickly.
6. Store with Care
Store the stone in a dry, stable environment. Avoid damp locations and protect the stone from impacts or sudden temperature changes. If stored long-term, ensure the stone is fully dry before placing it in a box or wrapping.
