This suita comes from the Kyoto beds and is stamped 正本山合砥・shōhonyama awasedo, the mark that certifies genuine Kyoto natural stone, under the Kyoto natural-stone cartouche. The face is blue-grey, laced across its full width with dense orange and ochre iron staining and crossed by a diagonal band in the lower third. Suita is the layer valued for the way its structure carries slurry and lets the blade run, and this one is hard for its type: at 4,5 of 5 on our hardness scale with an estimated grit of 8000 it stays crisp under pressure and finishes bright rather than soft. 5. Dry Slowly and Naturally
