Rarer Vintage Akamitsu・秋光 ・Japanese straight razor・Kamisori. Directly imported from Japan and restored by us to a hair-popping quality and sharpness. This Kamisori is somewhat special. It was in bad shape but we could restore it to its full original beauty after hours of honing and restoration. It was made pre 2nd WW, most likely in the 1920s or 30s. We got it together with its original sliding lid wooden box and 2 additional items. On the left you can see a Buddha brass bust, which is also a stamp. under the bust the stamp says "大清年製" made in Qing - meaning this bust was produced in Qing Dynasty China before 1911. It is accompanied by three Koto Picks, also called "Tsume" or "Kototsume" essential for playing the Japanese Koto instrument. We thought it would be a shame to separate these items from one another as the old owner also owned them together.

Full Description

This Kamisori was hand forged out of 2 layers, the cutting part is made of high carbon steel and the supporting layer of Iron.

The steel layer is brittle and hard, while the Iron gives the right flexibility.
Both layers are not stainless, so always keep your razor dry after your shave and protect it with a thin layer of oil.
Why is this blade not stainless?
Stainless blades are made of an alloy that will prevent it from staining, but also will make it less hard.
High carbon steels, like the cutting layer of this Kamisori, have a much higher hardness and will keep their smooth shaving quality for much longer before having to sharpen them again.

The Razor Handle is partially blued by us, to protect it from rusting. Bluing is similar to the protective coat which the razor had after being quenched in the time it has been made. Bluing forms a thin layer of magnetite (Fe3O4) on top of the iron.
After bluing we have attached a rattan handle wrapping and an underlaying layer of red Japanese silk, using a traditional wrapping technique for Japanese razors.

The engravings on the Kamisori read as:

録登・rokuto ・ registered
秋光・Akamitsu・the maker of this Kamisori
特製・tokusei・specially made

This Kamisori is fully disinfected, honed and shave ready.

Also note, in Japan, Kamisori are not only used to remove mens beards, they are also commonly used to remove fine facial hair also of women.
